Biography Banu Oney is an Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology of the Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey. Currently she is a Visiting Associate Professor at the Department of Educational Studies, University of Delaware. She received her Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1990, with a specialization in reading. She served as an assistant professor at Marmara University, Istanbul from 1990-1992. She joined the faculty at Bogazici University in 1992. Dr. Oney's current research interests concern psychological processes in reading. This work examines visual word recognition processes in different orthographies as well as beginning reading and reading disabilities. Over the past few years Dr. Oney's study on reading has focused on comparative studies of reading in Turkish and English. A second important focus of Dr. Oney's research is adult literacy. This work is being conducted in collaboration with Dr. Aydin Durgunoglu from the University of Minnesota. In 1995, Dr. Oney and Dr. Durgunoglu developed a new adult literacy program, which is now being nationally implemented in Turkey. Dr. Oney has carried out research in the area of adult literacy acquisition and is currently studying the cognitive and social contexts of adult literacy acquisition. Dr. Oney also works in educational technology and her research in this area focuses on learning in electronic environments, especially the Internet. This work examines information access, presentation, and learning in hypermedia environments.
