Biography R. Karl Rethemeyer serves as a Technology Consultant to the International Literacy Institute (ILI) and the National Center on Adult Literacy at the Graduate School of Education/University of Pennsylvania. Formerly manager of the ILI/NCAL Literacy Technology Laboratory, Rethemeyer is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he is studying the impact of electronic communication on social policy formation in the United States. While at NCAL Rethemeyer directed or co-directed several projects, including ALTIN, the Adult Literacy and Technology Innovation Network, a national staff development project on technology implementation, instructional technology, online communications, technology planning and fundraising for adult educators; and the development of NCAL's Adult Literacy Explorer CD-ROM, a multimedia introduction to technology and adult literacy. Rethemeyer has authored or co-authored several works on technology and adult literacy, including Joining the On-Line Community: An Introduction for Adult Literacy and Making the Right Choice: Evaluating Computer Software and Hardware for Adult Literacy Instruction.Rethemeyer is a regular conference presenter on technology issues in adult literacy and continues to be a consultant to NCAL and the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) on the LiteracyLink project, an Internet based initiative to provide computer-enhanced instruction to adult learners seeking their high school equivalency diploma.
