Technology Use in Adult Literacy (S2 T1)

Presenter: R. Karl Rethemeyer

Technology has many potential uses within literacy training and development. This session will give an overview of the limitations and possibilities of implementing technology as a tool for literacy.

Session Summary

This opening presentation in the Technology component of SLTP'98 provided an overview of the potential uses of technology in literacy.

The Technology portion of SLTP'98 is designed to: (1) provide basic skills in the use of computers and the Internet; (2) present real-life examples of applications of technology in literacy and adult education programs in the various projects of NCAL and ILI; and (3) provide a framework for technology planning for literacy in developing countries.

Educational technologies can have uses in research, policy and governance, program management and development, staff development, and in instruction and assessment. Two essential steps to using technology effectively are (1) getting to know the existing resources and context, and (2) developing a plan. The potential of technology can only be realized through careful planning, and the key is to develop a realistic vision based on knowledge of the local context and capabilities, with aspirations for growth and change.
