Introduction to Technology (S4 T2)

This will be a hands-on session introducing computers to beginners. The different parts of the machine and how to use them will be covered first. File management and word-processing skills will also be taught.

Session Summary

The SLTP'98 participants spent the afternoon learning about computers, some for the first time, at the Penn Technology in Education Learning Laboratory (PennTELL) at the Literacy Research Centers where the ILI and NCAL are also housed. The presenters, Steve Linberg and Karl Rethemeyer, gave an engaging presentation in which the complexities of technology were made accessible and easy to understand. The topics included:

  • coping with differential power supplies,
  • durabilty of hardware,
  • navigating the Windows operating system,
  • organizing files on your desktop,
  • disk management, and
  • viruses.

Following the presentation, Tom Andrzewjewski gave an introduction to word processing. The Tech Lab will be open every evening for participants to practice what they have learned. With daily training sessions and personal assisstance in the Tech Lab, each participant will enhance their technological skills.
